Winter Takeover Recap and 2023 Holiday Lights Contest Winners

  WHCA Event

by Devin Chicras

Over 400 neighbors joined us on December 16, 2023 as we took over Downtown Skyway AGAIN – this time, for our annual Winter Takeover. Read on to meet the silly characters, fun activities, and warm memories made at the event, and find out who our 2023 Holiday Lights Contest winners are!

The first stop on the Winter Takeover map was the WHCA tent across from Skyway Library! The first several hundred guests were able to score a Winter Takeover Treat Bag, Holiday Activity Pack, or fresh-baked Moon Village Bakery Cookie Pack.

We sent four wacky characters up and down the Skyway Business District in search of high-fives, honks, and warm hugs! Thank you to Olaf, Snowperson, Gingerbreadperson, and Nutcrackerperson for bringing the fun. They logged nearly four miles of waddling throughout the event.

Nevzat, the legend himself, whipped up at least one fresh hot cocoa with real chocolate and steamed milk PER MINUTE for THREE HOURS STRAIGHT. As soon as we put out the “Free Cocoa” sign and opened our tab, the line never stopped. Thanks, Nev!

Can you believe the inhabitants of the Arendelle kingdom found their way to Skyway? Olaf, Kristoff, Anna, and Elsa met some new Skyway friends in the King County Sheriff’s Office West Hill Alajawan Brown Memorial Storefront. Check out all of your fun photobooth shots!

Y’all are a crafty bunch! Thank you to Darlene and Jonathan from King County Parks for bringing the White Center Teen Program Rec Aides to Skyway Library for our holiday craft station! We had so much fun seeing all of the creative items you all made. Our friend, Hatter Mike, made it even more fun and festive by twisting up some neat holiday-themed balloon creations.
