People they stop by because we have the best coffee, and best veggie combination (injera with lentil and split pea, cabbage, carrots, and potatoes, and greens, and salads), and beef tibs, and different things. For breakfast, we have food that’s very popular too. The community is welcoming, and they help a lot in bad times and in good times. They’re here for me.

We’re a small business, family owned. We’ve been in business since 2016. We moved our business up here to Skyway, where we live, two years ago. We are BIPOC-owned, LGBTQ-friendly. We can cater to your dietary preferences. We have vegan options. [We use] all natural ingredients, we don’t use anything artificial. All of our things are made on a pretty small scale. I’ve had people tell me that it’s like what grandma used to make. Our flavors are pretty unique and we also have some basic flavors, for the people that like that. We sell some art from local artists from around here.
Naomie Zandt, co-owner of Moon Village Bakery
I grew up on Genesee, Columbia City area. In that neighborhood, the community events around there they weren’t necessarily super welcome to us when we were starting off our business. When we moved up to Skyway, though, it was a complete change. We were welcome in most of the community events, if not all of the community events. And the thing that I love about Skyway is that it has kept to that character that Columbia City and other parts of South Seattle have lost. And there isn’t so much encroachment from big corporations, like you don’t see Starbucks up here. Skyway has a lot of character and it’s a very unique place. And the community up here is very tight. It’s growing, but it still has that unique character that South Seattle has always had.

The community is very friendly. I’ve been serving here since 2005. We have a lot of schools over here–Dimmitt Middle School and Renton High School … and by the time I opened this school there was not any driving school in this area, so I’m so happy to be the first around here. And I believe I serve this community very well, especially the teenagers.
I believe [there are] so many reasons [why people should use First Pass Driving School]–our customers are 95% teenagers and I believe the teenagers like that style, the accent, and they always say to me I’m so funny and that’s what they tell me all the time. And we serve a lot of teenagers and they keep coming back. And at this time I have a lot of students who are telling me that I trained their mom or their dad when they were teenagers too. And that makes me so happy to know that.
I really love the job, I love serving teenagers. They are very funny, they are very easy, very friendly. They are not hard. And the other thing is that I’m really compassionate what I do, teaching kids, making things different, make sure the kids are safe, make sure they are understand the rules of the road, and understand the responsibility of driving.
Mohamed (Moha) Hassan, owner of First Pass Driving School
