We took over Skyway Park, and downtown Skyway (twice). We brought back the Community Coffee Hour to Skyway Library and returned our quarterly State of the Hill community meetings to in-person gatherings. We celebrated local businesses, dreamed big on public art projects, and restored wetlands. 2023 was a big year for West Hill Community Association, let’s look back at some highlights!
More than 70 volunteers helped transform Skyway Park
With three events in January, April, and December, we made a huge dent in removing hundreds of gallons of trash and thousands of square feet of blackberry from the delicate wetlands of Skyway Park with our friends at King County Parks. We cleared a new trail to enjoy Taylor Creek, and look forward to planting there in January 2024!
We brought the quarterly Community Coffee Hours back
Our first Community Coffee Hour since the pandemic was held on November 18, 2023 at Skyway Library and featured breakfast options from local businesses and an insightful presentation on fighting fraud. We hope to see you at our next one on February 17, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. in the Skyway Library meeting room!
We celebrated our local businesses
Skyway-West Hill’s business districts are full of friendly, hardworking small business owners with big hearts. Instead of corporate chains and big box stores, we have some uniquely wonderful places to shop and eat. We’ll keep this post updated as we continue to feature our community’s vibrant businesses in unincorporated 98178 that no longer need to only be a well-kept secret among locals. How many places on this list have you been to?
Our Fall 2023 newsletter landed in 8,500 mailboxes
Featuring fun events, great local businesses, and interesting local news, our four-page mailer went to every mailbox in Skyway-West Hill!
We took over all 23 acres of Skyway Park
On August 12, 2023, we held our epic Skyway Park Takeover and found out what happens when 500 neighbors run wild across 23 acres full of free food, ice cream, sports and activities, live entertainment, and a furry human-sized otter. Thank you to all of our friends who made this day special.
We took over Downtown Skyway with a massive Halloween party
Our Halloween Takeover on October 28, 2023 may have been Skyway’s BIGGEST EVENT EVER. Across two blocks of downtown Skyway, upwards of 1,000 guests enjoyed a block party, multiple activity zones and TWENTY storefront Treat Trail stops.
We helped folks register and vote
We can’t believe how many folks we got to celebrate with during our four-hour Election Day Voter Assistance Booth at Skyway Library on November 7, 2023! 1,295 neighbors dropped off their ballots, and we helped out everyone who needed fresh ballots and envelopes or just some stickers and encouragement. Going through the stats, it’s clear that there is still work to be done to fix inequities and increase voter turnout across the board. Join us and let’s do even better for 2024!
We also took over Downtown Skyway for a wintery celebration
Over 400 neighbors joined us on December 16, 2023 as we took over Downtown Skyway AGAIN – this time, for our annual Winter Takeover. Read on to meet the silly characters, fun activities, and warm memories made at the event, and find out who our 2023 Holiday Lights Contest winners are!
Our quarterly community catch-ups are now back in-person
After starting 2023 with a few virtual Quarterly Community Meetings, our “State of the Hill” gatherings are now in-person! Our Fall 2023 event was at Campbell Hill Elementary School and featured many special presentations and a ton of local food from restaurants like Salima Specialties and Angel City Deli. We hope to see you at the next on January 16, 2024 at Lakeridge Elementary, doors open at 6:30 p.m.
We’re getting ready to bring some fun art to Skyway
We gathered feedback all year from folks and learned what you’d like to see on murals throughout Skyway. We’re excited to announce that we’re now working with multiple artists to make these public art projects a reality, and we can’t wait for you to see them in 2024!
Thank you so much for making 2023 wonderful. Every event, project, and activity requires your participation in order to make it truly special. We look forward to all of the amazing things we’ll do together in 2024!
